Feb 16, 2006 - SCAM AWARENESS

SCAM AWARENESS: There have been reports of booking agencies scamming professional and fresh musicians into booking gigs. One such story is as follows: The scam this time involves being asked to quote and getting booked for a gig and then when it's agreed, I'm asked for a registration fee.. which is bogus..." Drawing on a specific time, he was booked for a gig with a fee of €1500 before the scammers then promptly sent him a cheque for €4000 (by mistake) and asked him to send them a cheque of €2500 the residual before the gig. No surprise to him, he said, "the first cheque of course bounced in and out of my account on the same day! that's the scam!" Fortunately Paul has been a pro musician for a long time and so is wary of these things and didn't get caught, but is concerned for the youger enthusiastic and inexperienced musicians as it seems to be getting worse. Though this report comes to us from the UK, please be cautious in USA as well!
