What are Independent Music Artists? In the independent genre, independent music artists are comprised of artists whose melodies may reflect any number of genres. Independent music artists are characterized by their freedom from current culture and pop music. Creating music apart from mainstream influence, independent music artists are most often disassociated from major recording labels.

Independent music artists usually maintain their recording career with a self-service attitude, (commonly referred to as DIY Music) with the ability to work solo without corporate influence. Going against the grain of mainstream music, independent music artists are sometimes known as "hipsters" or "indie kids." Additionally, independent music artist recordings may be divided into several subcategories.

Most independent music artists are struggling to find ways to market themselves in the music industry. It's interesting to note that independent music companies were collectively responsible for the largest share of global record sales in 2002, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Their figures state that 28.9 % of record sales are from independent music artists as compared to some of the major labels such as Universal with a 23.5% share, Sony a 14.7& share, EMI with a 12.9% share, Warner with 11.8% and BMG with an 8.3% share in record sales for 2002.

Independent music artists are usually disassociated with major recording labels, and often must fund their own marketing events and tours. Famed R.E.M. and the B-52's began their music careers as independent music artists.

In more recent news, independent music recording artist, Caribou, won the best alternative recording artist for his independent music album titled, "The Milk of Human Kindness" at the Hamilton Music Awards.
