| Indie What is Indie Music? Commonly referred to as 'independent music,' Indie recording artists perform and record melodies, which may reflect any number of genres. Characterized by freedom from current culture and pop music, indie recording artists create music apart from mainstream influence, and their sounds are most often disassociated from major record publishers. Going against the grain of mainstream music, these music artists are sometimes known as "hipsters" or "indie kids." Though this category can be divided into several subcategories, it is commonly heaped into classes of Indie Rock and Pop. Some indie music falls into the category of "electronic indie" or "indietronic" music. This music is a combination of electronic and indie rock music. In more recent news, Indie music recording artist, Caribou, won the best alternative recording artist for his album titled, "The Milk of Human Kindness" at the Hamilton Music Awards. Indie music artists usually remain separate from major recording labels, and often must fund their own marketing events and tours.
