Multitrack Recording

What is a multitrack recording? Also known as multitracking or tracking, multitrack recording is a technique used to record sound separately or in combination with multiple sound sources. In a multitrack recording, tracks are synchronized so music performances may be played back and reviewed; while at the same time, additional sound may be recorded or added to original recordings as well.

Multitrack recording instruments differ in their recording capability; e.g. multitrack recording devices may offer various amounts of simultaneous recording tracks. Having multitrack recording devices allows musicians to play recorded music, and then record their singing performances alongside the music, or in synchronicity with their recorded voices. Additionally, multitrack recordings can also allow for different musical instruments to be recorded one at a time or together on separate tracks. This gives accessibility to sound recordings so that they may be processed and modified to achieve the final master cut. When recordings are finished, the multiple tracks are mixed into two tracks where they may be duplicated and distributed.

If it weren’t for multitrack recording capabilities, DJs and other recording engineers would not be able to ‘remix’ recordings.

We hope that this explanation provides sufficient information about multitrack recording however if you would like to contribute your own article or story about this particular topic, feel free to do so at Media Positive Radio today.
