Music Conductors

What do music conductors do? As the name implies music conductors ‘conduct’ music. You may have seen these individuals during a live orchestra or choir performance or on television, and most times, they seem to be waving their hands frantically. In all actuality, music conductors use these visible hand gestures to direct the shape of the melody.

While some music conductors simply use their hands to direct music, others use staffs or batons. Music conductors must have a basic comprehension of musical expression including dynamics, tempo and style to proficiently conduct a choir or orchestra. Music conductors control the beat of the music with their right hand by signaling a shape of each bar or measure in accordance with the time signature.

Other directional signals that music conductors may use include body language such as increased eye contact, circular hand motions or leaning backward or forth.

Since the middle ages, music conductors have been directing musicians and vocalists. Famed Ludwig van Beethoven was a famous composer, but less commonly known is the fact that he was also a music conductor; as well as Igor Stravinsky, Richard Strauss, and more recently, Placido Domingo who was the music conductor for the Los Angeles Opera and the Washington National Opera.
