Music Contests

Music contests abound all the way from simple karaoke competitions to the internationally recognized American Idol show. The winners of vocal contests can be awarded thousands of dollars, as well as opportunities to meet and perform with celebrities, and much, much more.

Around the country, music contests are open throughout the year and awards are promised to come faster and more often. New singers, songwriters, and musicians coming to the music industry do not have to compete with those who have already made record label deals. Aspiring vocalists might very well get their first break into the business through a music competition.

It is easy to find music contests posted in music stores, in magazines, on the Web, and anywhere they might catch the eye of the public. Auditions for a singing contest may seem like the bottom rung to songwriters or singers, but it can lead to better things. If you win, it could jump start your career in music like nothing else. And the competition may not be as crushing as one might imagine.

Entering a music contest will take only a bit of organization and a little time. Read applications and understand the requirements, compile the necessary ingredients, make copies, and enter contests that are geared toward career building. Get the hang of the process and make it your (temporary) job. Be careful to research the music contests that you are considering entering. There are plenty of moochers out there who are happy to take your hard-earned cash and turn out worthless awards and no recognition.

Sure, winning the right contest could result in awards of money, but you might also get studio time, and you might even be offered a record contract. Publicity may be the biggest of all payoffs. But if nothing else, someone out there hears your voice or your lyrics. That’s good for openers. Winning can mean your future. Be prepared to make the most of it. Also be prepared to acknowledge competition sponsors, the life blood of music contests.

Companies who sponsor music contests earn lots of publicity, and they are willing to take advantage of promoting the winners to get more of it. If you win a music contest, you might anticipate being asked to sit for interviews and to be asked for press releases. Prepare a press kit. Study press releases, paying attention to effective writing and composition, and get help if you need it! Highlight your accomplishments in one or more press release sketches before the music contest. Send finished press releases to newspapers and magazines with information that you want to see in print. Early preparation will save you some effort and give you the jump on the publicity while you’re hot!
