| Promotions The word promotions is something you will hear often when it comes to publicity for singers, musical artists, songwriters, and musicians. Promotions are crucial to career development in the music industry. Little or nothing happens simply by chance. Not all music careers need the same types of promotions. Bands, singer-artists, singer-songwriters, and songwriters all have different needs, require different venues, and have different expectations of their careers in music. As a beginning musician, you can choose to learn to handle your own publicity, or you could hire an individual promoter to do specific jobs as needed. Later, you can employ a full-fledged personal manager to take care of everything – for a considerable fee, of course. Handling your own music publicity can take considerable time, but can also be very informative. Self promotion can be a good way to learn a lot about the music industry, about audiences, about venues such as radio DJs and club managers, about magazine and newspaper articles, about music publishers, and about business and business management. A good press kit must be prepared and sent to recording companies and music publishers; this will help get your career under way. Press kits (also known as promotions packages or promo packs) should include your website (get one!), which includes your music and information about yourself. And, don’t forget the all-important press release. Make sure your press kit has one. Promotions packages should be targeted to local radio stations, college radio stations, and internet stations, remembering that mixed and mastered CDs only are good enough for the job! Do some research, e-mail or call to get information, and be sure you always include contact information! Send your demo CD where your music best fits the audience. Use different promotional methods and promote to various venues. Promotion is an important part of your business. The best success follows effort. Promote yourself as a professional to television stations, radio stations, newspapers, and even record distributors and publishers. The idea of promotions is just to keep your name and face in the eyes and minds of the public. If you would like to submit an article about promotions or any other music-related subject, please feel free to do so here at Media Positive Radio. |
