Radio Stations

Radio stations are audio or sound broadcasting services that operate on a form of electromagnetic radiation. Broadcasting traditionally operates through the air, as radio waves flow from a transmitter to an antenna, and ultimately, to a receiving device (radio receiver). Radio stations are often linked through networks to broadcast programs through syndications or simulcasts, which allows programs to be broadcast nationwide – and even broader.

Radio has a complex history, beginning as radio-telegraph systems, and did not transmit audio communications. The first audio transmissions developed in the early 20th century with two-way communications. This soon developed into the ability to broadcast to radio receivers, which popularized the medium. The first commercial radio station came into being in 1920, when radio technology became a world-wide phenomenon.

Commonly known radio stations operate on the earliest form of audio radio transmission, short wave (AM - amplitude modification). Short wave broadcasts are sensitive to atmospheric conditions, but they are able to broadcast over hundreds, if not thousands, of miles. Longer range radio waves (FM - frequency modulation) broadcast more locally and provide good sound fidelity, which is especially effective for broadcasting music.

The past 15 years have seen the Internet become a more effective form of radio station provider. Internet radio stations broadcast from anywhere in the world, and do not come under the same level of FCC scrutiny as do airwave broadcasters in the United States. Anyone anywhere in the world with a connection to the Internet can develop and cast their own radio station, and anyone anywhere in the world with an Internet connection can listen to that radio station.

Other types technology are under development that allow radio station broadcasting. Two that are emerging into the mainstream are digital radio and satellite radio. As these technologies develop and become more feasible, both are expected to overtake all other types of radio broadcasting, and they will have few limits as to origins, regions of broadcast, and quality of sound.

Internet-distributed radio is strong today, and Media Positive Radio is one Internet source for music and talk show broadcasting available to anyone interested in creating and providing their own show. Commercial radio stations, however, will continue to broadcast on AM and FM technology for the next decade or two with little change. Radio station formats will entertain us with talk shows and music genres as long as the public will listen to them.

This is a general overview of radio stations. If you would like to contribute your own article about this topic, please feel free to do so at Media Positive Radio today.
