| Record Distributors What do record distributors do? As the words imply, record distributors ‘distribute records.’ How? Record distributors work directly with record labels to put records into various retail outlets and music stores. Additionally, record distributors are often parted by two categories: regional distributors and national distributors. Functioning as a ‘middleman,’ record distributors are wholesalers who work between record manufacturers and retailers; and while many record distributor branches are owned by major record labels, there are a few indie record distributors as well. It is important to realize that even if and when record distributors decide to take on the task of selling your record, that promotion is the key to successful sales of your works. This is where record labels and business managers can be beneficial in marketing you and your album. Some major record distributors include Capitol/EMI Distribution and subsidiaries; DreamWorks Records and subsidiaries; Sony Music Group, BMG and subsidiaries; Universal Music Group (UMG) and subsidiaries; WEA, Inc and Warner Music Group and subsidiaries. Some independent record distributors include Curb Records, Alternative Distribution Alliance, and Platinum Entertainment, to name a few. While this is a general overview of what record distributors are, if you would like to contribute your own article or expertise about this particular topic, feel free to do so at Media Positive Radio today. |
