Recording Artists

Recording Artists are often talented professional entertainers or singers in the music industry. Recording artists usually fall into particular music genres (depending on their musical style) including alternative, classical, classic rock, Indies, blues, jazz, pop, reggae, etc.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, the top five recording artists in the United States (based on cumulative album sales) are The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Garth Brooks, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles. [1]

Diamond Awards are prestigious honors presented to recording artists based on the total number of sales of albums and singles recorded by them. The top-ten roundup of Diamond Award recording artist winners include:

  • Eagles for their album titled, ‘Eagles/Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975
  • Michael Jackson with his album titled, ‘Thriller’
  • Led Zeppelin’s ‘Led Zeppelin IV’
  • Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’
  • Billy Joel for his album titled ‘Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II
  • AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’
  • Garth Brooks for his album titled ‘Double Live’
  • Shania Twain’s album ‘Come on Over’
  • The Beatles with their album ‘The Beatles’
  • Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’

While these are just a small representation of some of the many recording artists associated with the music industry, some recording artists may not have necessarily made their claim to fame based on record sales, but more so in relation to their historical impact on society.

Drafted in 1958 by the United States Army, superstar recording artist, Elvis Presley, continued to make headlines while attending to his tour of duty in both Fort Hood, Texas and in Germany.

In 1964 America experienced its first ‘music revolution’ by way of ‘The British Invasion.’ Starting with The Beatles, The British Invasion opened doors to now very famous recording artists such as Cream, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd (to name a few).

During 1969, a larger-than-life recording artist festival was about to make an incredible historical mark on America. Having over 500,000 interactive youth fans and activists, Woodstock was host to many great music recording artist legends including but not limited to Joan Baez, CCR, Sly and the Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, The Grateful Dead, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Sha-Na-Na.

Popular 1970s’ recording artists brought Disco music into the limelight. The Bee Gees, one of Disco’s popular recording artist groups hit charts with their hit songs, ‘How Deep is Your Love,’ ‘Jive Talkin,’ and ‘Stayin’ Alive.’ In the mid to late 1970s, Donna Summer became more than just a recording artist diva, she was dubbed the ‘Disco Queen’ for her hits including ‘Love to Love you Baby;’ subsequently, this superstar recording artist went on to achieve more chart topping singles with ‘Bad Girls’ in 1979 and ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ in 1983.

Throughout recording artist history, shakers and movers have left their musical impressions on the music industry. Since the 1980s, recording artists such as Madonna, Michael and Janet Jackson, Jon Bon Jovi, Naomi and Wynonna Judd, LeAnn Rimes, Gwen Stefani, Alan Jackson, Bono, Babyface and many other genre-specific recording artists continue to wow listeners everywhere.

While this is a general overview about recording artists, if you would like to contribute your own article or expertise about this particular topic, feel free to do so at Media Positive Radio today.
