A little tidbit about Alternative Music... What is alternative music? Actually, one could define alternative music as music which is different than mainstream. If you're really honest, alternative music can trace its musical roots back to the mid 50s when the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, made his musical debut. During this time, his music style was considered very different and an alternative music sort by popular culture; thus begun an era of alternative music. Finding its foundation from underground artists and some rock music, alternative music has occasionally been influenced by folk, jazz, reggae and even techno sounds. During the 1980s, alternative music phrase was coined because of some musicians' inability to fit into mainstream music categories. 1980s' alternative music bands, the Talking Heads, the Police and the Clash were just a few of many rising stars of the time. Alternative music includes subcategories such as college rock, indie rock, gothic rock, grunge, and punk rock. Some well-known alternative music bands include Nirvana, REM, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Additionally, alternative music bands like Collective Soul climbed to the top of rock charts with their song "Shine" in 1994, winning Billboard award for the Top Rock Track. While the face of alternative music is continually transforming, there will always be a place for it throughout the course of time.
