| Performance Royalty What is a “performance royalty”? A performance royalty is a fee paid when any public performance of a copyrighted song produces royalties for the owner of that copyrighted song. Publishers and writers are usually the owners of copyrighted songs and are generally the ones paid performance royalties. A Performance Rights Organization, or PRO, is an entity that collects and oversees the distribution of each performance royalty, which may be due as a result of a performance through several venues, including the Internet, stage, video, movie, television, and radio. Performance royalty fees are based on a catalog of songs that are aired on radio stations. A broadcasting license fee is paid for each catalog of songs. Basically, a percentage of that fee is distributed to owners of copyrighted materials as a performance royalty.
